Details

Brown whole grain rice is made from kernels of rice from which only the hull has been removed. The light brown color is the bran layers, which are rich in minerals and vitamins. Cooked brown rice has a slightly chewy texture and a nut-like flavor. It’s grown in the U.S.A., is kosher, naturally sodium, cholesterol-free, fat-free, and gluten free. Refrigerated storage is recommended for brown rice.

Directions

Boil: Cooking directions on the stove:

1. In a saucepan, bring water to a boil.*

2. Stir in rice.**

3. Cover. Reduce heat and simmer for 45 minutes or until all water is absorbed.

*Cooking Measurement Chart: For drier rice use 1/4 cup less water. For moister rice, use 1/4 cup more of water.

To make 5 servings (3/4 cup cooked), add 1 cup rice to 2 1/2 cups water to yield 3 1/2 cups cooked rice.

To make 9 servings (3/4 cup cooked), add 2 cups rice to 5 cups water to yield 7 cups cooked rice.

To make 14 servings (3/4 cup cooked), add 3 cups rice to 7 1/2 cups water to yield 10 1/2 cups cooked rice.*

*Add 1 Tbsp. butter and 1 tsp. salt per cup of uncooked rice, if desired.

**Add 1 Tbsp. butter and 1 tsp. salt per cup of uncooked rice, if desired. Microwave: Cooking direction in the microwave***:

1. In a 2 1/2-quart microwave-safe dish, combine 3 cups water and 1 cup brown rice.**

2. Microwave uncovered on high for 10 minutes. Reduce power to 50% microwave uncovered for 20 minutes. Allow rice to sit for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork and serve. Do not add salt or butter/margarine to the rice until after the rice is cooked.

**Add 1 Tbsp. butter and 1 tsp. salt per cup of uncooked rice, if desired.

***It is recommended that only 1 cup rice be prepared in the microwave at a time. Microwave ovens vary. Cooking times are approximate.

Brown Rice Storage: For longer shelf life we recommend storing brown rice in the refrigerator or freezer.
